Obituary

Mary Sue Lumley Couch, age 77, passed into the hands of God on Saturday, September 18, 2021.

Sue grew up in Wrightsville, Georgia. She was a daughter of Claude W. Lumley and Ruth Smith Lumley, of blessed memory. Also preceding her in death are her oldest son, Chris Couch, and her brother, Claude "Sonny" Lumley.

Keeping her memory and legacy alive are her husband Howard Kenneth "Kenny" Couch; daughter, Lori Herndon (husband, Dennis); son, John Couch (wife, Mandy); daughter-in-law, Tammy Couch; grandchildren: Spencer Couch, Mason Couch (wife, Phoebe), Cooper Garrett, Parker Couch, Chloe Garrett, and Taylor Couch; sisters, Melinda Coghlan (husband, Charles) and Elaine Brantley; and numerous nieces and nephews.

For the past 51 years, she has made her home in Gordon, Georgia. Through all of those years, her steadfast husband and best friend, Kenny, stood by her side. Together, these two shared something rare: a true love that grew sweeter and stronger with age.

She was a graduate of Crandall Business College and worked for many years across several professions, but her true calling was serving her church and raising her family. Known affectionately by many names, including "Mary Sue," "Mama," "Susie Q," and "Nana," she loved her family fiercely and selflessly. As a lifelong pianist, she loved playing for her family and her church family. If you could hum it, she could play it.

She will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to know her.

Visitation will take place Tuesday, September 21, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Gordon First Baptist Church; the funeral will begin at the same location at 12:00 p.m. Reverend Aaron Thomason and Reverend Bob Hamilton, Sr. will be officiating.

There will be a private family burial at Ramah Cemetery immediately following the service.

Donations may be made in her memory to the "Wednesday Meal Fund" (which delivers meals to shut-ins) at Gordon First Baptist Church. Flowers are also welcome.

Couey-Reece-Stanley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
