Janice H.
Vinson
Oct 17, 1946 — Jan 11, 2025
A memorial service for Janice Humphries Vinson, age 78, will be held at 2:00 P.M., Saturday, February 8, 2025, at the Couey Reece Stanley Memorial Chapel in Gordon, GA. The family will receive friends 1:00 PM to 1:45 PM at the funeral home.
Janice was born on October 17, 1946 and raised in Gordon, GA. She passed away on Saturday, January 11, 2025 after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. She retained her vibrant personality until the end. Janice was a secretary for Central State Hospital for a number of years before moving to New York City to become an immigration paralegal with Barst & Mukamal. Upon returning to Georgia, she lived in Atlanta, the city she loved so dearly, to work for the law firms of Kilpatrick & Cody and later, Lee, Lynch & Ford.
During her years in Atlanta, her grandchildren recall visiting "Gram's Hotel" in Colony Square and thought it great fun to walk downstairs to the donut shop in the building. She introduced her grandson Cory to professional hockey, giving him the opportunity to attend several Atlanta Thrasher games. Her only granddaughter, Abby, given any opportunity, enjoyed sitting beside Grams on the sofa and having her to gently scratch her arms. Dylan and Caleb recall her taking them to their first concert which was to see Josh Turner because they loved the song Long Black Train. They also recall that she took them to Atlanta Braves games. When the youngest of the grandchildren were born, she chose to move back to Gordon to help care for the precious twins, Nick and Cole. She loved getting hugs and kisses from them, and they often went to the movie theater and out to eat together as well. Janice loved to travel and went on several adventures with her sister, Katherine. Her favorite trips with her sister were to France, London, and South America.
Janice was an avid music fan. She not only enjoyed listening to music, but she was also known for her beautiful singing voice as well. She was an enthusiastic concert attendee and always enjoyed the privilege of meeting some of her favorites thanks to her "Cousin Bobby." Janice found her happy place in life when she found The Big House Museum in Macon. She spent many years acting as a tour guide, and there was little that she didn't know about the brothers. Through her time there, she began to travel to music events connected with The Allman Brothers Band around the southern U.S.
Janice is perhaps best known to her family and friends for her smile and her larger than life laugh. She was also known for being fashionably dressed and always the professional in the workplace. She never seemed to meet a stranger. She also cooked one of the best banana puddings known to man.
She was predeceased by her parents, James Olin Humphries and Katie Hawthorne Humphries Reed, her sister, Katherine Humphries Gongora, and her nephew, Gary Gongora.
She is survived by her daughters, Lanna Mallette and Mandey Phillips (James Lakeman), her grandchildren, Cory Mallette, Abby Mallette, Caleb Phillips (Kayler Dickens), Dylan Phillips (Taylor Wright), Cole Walls, and Nick Walls, and two great grandsons, William Phillips and JW Huff. She is also survived by one nephew, Greg Gongora (Renee) and two great nephews, Jake (Jenni) Gongora and Logan Gongora.
The family would like to express their thanks for the wonderful care she received over the past several years from Georgia Hospice, 12 Oaks Assisted Living, and Dublinair Health Care and Rehab.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her memory to The Big House Museum in Macon, Georgia. Mama, "Let your soul and spirit sail into the mystic."
